Background

  • The Junior Tennis Champions Center (“JTCC”) is a world class training program located in the Washington DC metropolitan area. Founded in 1999, JTCC provides opportunities for junior players from diverse backgrounds. In 2008, our supporters provided over $500,000 in financial assistance in need-based and merit-based aid and grants.  At its inception in 1999, the Junior Tennis Champions Tennis program had 40 students. Today we have more than doubled that enrollment.
  • JTCC’s goal is to identify talented and highly motivated young people and teach them to excel on the tennis court and in the classroom. Every student who has graduated from the program has received a scholarship to a Division I school or a facilitated acceptance at a Division III or Ivy League school. (SEE ADDENDUM I)
  • JTCC has been named the first United States Tennis Association (USTA) Regional Training Center by the USTA, tennis’ national governing body.

Mission Statement

  • JTCC strives to be the best junior tennis training program in the world. The not-for-profit Champions Center has an unwavering commitment to developing tennis champions who uphold the highest competitive, ethical and personal values on their way to realizing their full potential. The Champions program uses tennis as a vehicle for educating young people, from their introduction to the game to top tier collegiate and professional competition. JTCC develops champions on and off the court, “Champions for life”.

Philosophy

  • The core of the JTCC philosophy is the personalized mentoring that every student athlete receives. An important element is that character development is at least as important as athletic performance. Each player in the program has a primary coach-mentor who oversees training, academics, and tournament scheduling. Mentors create individualized performance plans, tackling numerous issues, such as competing with integrity, self-esteem, diet, parental involvement and time management.
  • JTCC engages students at an early age, thereby enhancing their academic performance and life skills. Using tennis as an instrument for teaching discipline, JTCC enables young people to maximize their academic opportunities.
  • Players are tested and evaluated at specific points in the year regarding physiological aspects of tennis performance. These include coordination, balance, agility, power and speed. Individual profile assessments are generated by our exercise physiologist and provide an important base for each players training regimen.
  • Every student in the program also receives extensive physical training designed by our world class strength and conditioning coach.  The goal of this fitness training is to have each student connect work in the gym with results on the court. This personalized tennis-specific fitness training gives our players a competitive edge.

Academics

  • The Champions Center places academic achievement on a par with athletic performance. Participation in the tennis program is contingent on good academic standing.
  • Students must have at least a 2.0 GPA to gain acceptance into JTCC and maintain a 2.5 GPA after the first year.
  • To enable students to participate in more rigorous training schedules, JTCC provides college preparatory education at an on-site school with two full-time instructors and a nationally accredited online curriculum.

Our Student Athletes

  • At the Champions Center, our youngsters commit to a demanding routine of on-court instruction, match play, physical fitness training, academic studies, and tournament travel. In addition to encouraging their joy for the sport of tennis, we strive to help each student develop self-esteem, perseverance, decision-making skills, the ability to focus on goals, and a commitment to high standards.
  • The Champions Center is a team environment. Each student-athlete and each coach is a key member of the team. They practice together, compete together, and travel together. Because tennis can be an isolating sport, it is important that our student-athletes feel camaraderie while they train at the Champions Center as well as when they compete in tournaments. Support and encouragement from peers and training partners is a core value of the Champions Center.
  • Students currently training at the Champions Center include residents of Prince George's County, MD, Montgomery County, MD, Washington, DC, Northern VA, as well as Ghana, Morocco, Russia, and Belarus.

On Court Success
